In the history of Bangladesh, few figures stand as tall as Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. A freedom fighter who proclaimed the declaration of independence, a military leader who brought stability to a young nation, and a visionary statesman who laid the foundations of multiparty democracy — Ziaur Rahman's contributions to Bangladesh are both profound and enduring.
The Proclamation of Independence
On 27th March 1971, as a Major in the Pakistan Army, Ziaur Rahman made the historic proclamation of independence from Chittagong's Kalurghat Radio Station. This act of extraordinary courage galvanized the entire nation and marked the beginning of Bangladesh's armed struggle for freedom. His voice became the voice of a nation yearning to be free.
Building a Nation
After the turbulent years following independence, Ziaur Rahman assumed the presidency and brought much-needed stability and direction to Bangladesh. He introduced the multiparty democratic system, allowing political freedom and pluralism to flourish. He founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on 1st September 1978, creating a political platform built on the principles of Bangladeshi nationalism, democracy, and self-reliance.
Economic Vision
Under Ziaur Rahman's leadership, Bangladesh saw significant economic progress. He championed rural development, self-sufficiency in food production, and population control. His nineteen-point program addressed the fundamental needs of the Bangladeshi people and set the country on a path toward modernization and growth.
A Legacy That Lives On
Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated on 30th May 1981, but his ideals never died. Today, millions of Bangladeshis carry his vision in their hearts. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party continues to fight for democracy, sovereignty, and the dignity of every citizen. As a young BNP worker, I am proud to walk the path he paved — the path of Bangladeshi nationalism, democracy, and love for the motherland.
